Manchester, Jan 14: Manchester City have taken a strong step toward the EFL Cup final after securing a 2–0 victory over Newcastle United in the first leg of their semi-final clash on Tuesday night.
Playing at St James’ Park, City broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute when Antony Semenyo found the back of the net to give the visitors a crucial lead. Newcastle struggled to respond, and City maintained control for much of the second half.
Deep into injury time, Ryan Cherki sealed the win by scoring in the second minute of added time, doubling City’s advantage and putting them in a commanding position ahead of the return leg.
The first half had ended goalless, but City’s second-half dominance proved decisive. With a 2–0 aggregate lead, Pep Guardiola’s side now look well placed to book a spot in the final.
The second leg of the semi-final will be played on February 5, where Newcastle will need a strong comeback to keep their hopes alive.
