Kathmandu, Aug 14: A total of 20,526 complaints related to cybercrime have been registered at the police office from mid-July 2025 (Nepali Fiscal Year 2082/83) to mid-July 2026 (2083/84).
In the reporting period, 161 cases of cybercrime were filed, and 155 people were arrested.
Among the registered complaints, 7,123 were related to misuse of Facebook/Messenger, 6,776 for TikTok, 3,105 for WhatsApp, 1,031 for Telegram, 628 for Instagram, 114 for email, 21 for Viber, 38 for Imo, 64 for YouTube, 14 for WeChat, 11 for Twitter, 11 for Google, 744 for eSewa/Khalti/bank accounts/SMS, and 846 related to organizations.
During the fiscal year 2081/82, total 18,926 complaints were registered while 19,730 complaints related to cybercrime were filed with the police in the Fiscal Year 2080/81.
In regard to the recent trends in cybercrime, Superintendent of Police (SP) Dilip Kumar Giri, also the spokesperson at the Cyber Bureau, said that with the use of social media, its misuse is also increasing.
According to him, looking at the trend of complaints in the last two fiscal years, there has been an increase in scams such as accessing victims’ bank accounts through banks and wallet offices under false pretenses, scamming people by claiming gifts, lotteries, and parcels, deceiving through romantic relationships, luring with promises of foreign employment, scamming via online job offers on Telegram, WhatsApp, and Instagram, and scamming in the name of online shopping.
Due to the misuse of technology, new types and trends of crime are emerging, making criminal investigations even more challenging.
To face such challenges and to prevent and successfully investigate technology-based crimes, the Government of Nepal established the Cyber Bureau on 10 June 2018.
The Bureau has been increasingly equipped with technology, enhancing police personnel’s capacity in cybercrime and security, as well as running various programmes to raise cyber security awareness among the general public.
The Nepal Police remains active in preventing and investigating crimes committed through the use of technology.
