Kathmandu, July 9: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged the government to ensure proper management of landless people.
Issuing a press statement on Thursday, Undersecretary and Assistant Spokesperson at NHRC, Shyambabu Kafle, urged the government not to take any action that jeopardizes the human rights of squatters, but respect their lives, freedom, equality and dignity.
Since April 25, the squatters settling in various places including the Bagmati River banks in Kathmandu were evacuated and kept in various holding centres. They are now removed from the holding centres as well.
“Since the last removal of squatters, NHRC has been monitoring their situation. As per monitoring, the landless households were found to have asked to vacate the holding centres within five days; once this time was over, they were handed over another time limit of seven days to quit the holding centres,” the press release mentioned.
Giving ultimatum to the landless households to leave the holding centres without any alternative, forcing them to leave centres and not providing adequate food shows the government agencies did not take guardianship of landless people to protect their economic, social, cultural and civil rights.
