Chengdu bids farewell to the World Games, sets a new benchmark for the future

Chengdu, August 18: On the evening of August 17, as the warm melody of the song “Chengdu” filled the air, athletes, coaches, and officials from around the world waved farewell at the closing ceremony of the Chengdu World Games, sharing an emotional goodbye. Over the past 11 days, participants have written a remarkable chapter in the history of the Games with their dedication, sweat, and determination.

Tom Dielen, Vice President of the International World Games Association (IWGA), praised the host city, saying: “Chengdu has set a perfect benchmark for future World Games. Thank you all for contributing to this unforgettable experience.”

This edition of the Games saw 18 world records broken. Athletes from 52 countries and regions claimed gold medals, while competitors from 81 nations reached the podium—a new record for the most medal-winning countries in World Games history.

Seventeen-year-old American cheerleading athlete Allison Hoeft won her first-ever World Games gold in Chengdu. Reflecting on her experience, she said, “Unlike previous competitions, the Chengdu World Games are truly incomparable. Everyone here is incredibly kind, and the volunteers were wholeheartedly helpful. This left a deep impression on us.”

The Chinese delegation achieved historic success, winning a total of 64 medals—36 gold, 17 silver, and 11 bronze, the best result since China began participating in the Games. Deputy head Zhang Xin summarized their performance in four words, “breakthrough, struggle, openness, integration.” China topped both the gold medal count and overall medal tally for the first time, marking a historic leap in achievement.

The Chengdu World Games showcased a world-class sporting event infused with Chinese culture and Sichuan charm. Organization, volunteer service, transportation, and security earned widespread praise. Claude Azéma, President of the International Boules Federation, said, “The Chengdu World Games were truly unprecedented. I have never experienced anything like it. Nearly everyone praised the organization. For a long time, these Games will be remembered as the best.”

Though the Games have officially concluded, the spirit of sportsmanship and energy will continue to resonate worldwide.

IWGA President José Perurena added, “Feedback from athletes confirms that this was the most successful World Games ever. To the people of Chengdu: you should be very proud. Athletes from over 110 countries are returning home, but they will always remember Chengdu because of your outstanding hospitality.”
