Six cheetah killed, eight rescued in Tanahu

Kathmandu: Six cheetah including a cub died in different places of Tanahu in the fiscal year 2019/20. Of them, five were found dead in Bhanu municipality and one in Byas municipality, according to the Division Forest Office, Tanahu.

Likewise, the office rescued eight Cheetah including five from Bhanu, two from Badipur and one from Byas municipalities and released them to different national and animal parks. During the period, four deer and one python were also rescued and left in the jungle, said assistant forest officer at the office Baburam Upreti.

The wild cat species also led to the death of six children in the district. Of them, three children in Bhanu and one each in Anbukhaireni, Bandipur and Shuklagandaki were killed in attacks by the Cheetah.

A man and a woman were injured during the year. Likewise, the forest office has recorded 48 incidents of attack by Cheetah on domesticated animals during the year, where 59 cattle perished. Chief of the Office Kedar Baral said the Cheetah have been wandering into human settlements in search of food, which has been depleting inside the forests. Hence, the food species of the Cheetah needs to be preserved as the wild animal plays an important role in the ecological balance.
