Kathmandu, Aug 10: Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal has said the Foreign Ministry has been coordinating with agencies concerned for discovery, authentication, digitalization and safe archiving of documents with historical and diplomatic importance.
The Ministry has formed a separate records management section for this purpose. Foreign Minister Khanal underlined that old treaties signed by Nepal with different countries and international organisations would be revised, amended and renewed gradually.
A report presented as per Article 53 of the Constitution mentioned that Nepal has signed total 655 treaties and agreements with different countries including neighbouring countries as well as with regional organisations and other parties. Of them, 55 treaties and agreements have been revised.
The Foreign Minister viewed that the government has a policy to review, revise and renew the remaining 600 treaties and agreements based on need and justification.
The Government of Nepal shall review treaties and agreements on a suitable time keeping the country’s interest in the centre, with cooperation and consensus with respective friendly nations and international organizations, he stressed.
The Foreign Minister clarified that review, revision and renewal of bilateral and multilateral treaties and agreement depends on mutual consensus and approval of concerned nation and international organizations.
There would be cooperation between Foreign Ministry, Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs and concerned thematic ministries to review the treaties and agreements.
He was of the opinion that progress would be regularly monitored based on an annual action plan by determining priorities on the basis of available human as well as other resources required.
