Transport entrepreneurs suggest levying additional charges on fuel and electric charging

Kathmandu, July 18: The Federation of Nepalese National Transport Entrepreneurs, an umbrella organization of transport entrepreneurs in the country, has suggested levying an additional charge of one rupee per liter on petroleum products and one rupee per unit on electric charging charges to consolidate the traffic accident relief fund.

Submitting separate memorandums to Minister for Infrastructure Development, Sunil Lamsal and Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Sobita Gautam, the FNNTE suggested levying additional charges to establish an ‘Road Accident Relief Fund’ for the immediate rescue, treatment and compensation of victims of road accidents in the Motor Vehicle and Transport Management Act, 2049. The Act is currently is in the process of being amended.

Federation General Secretary Deknath Gautam shared that the government has been suggested to increase the price of petrol and diesel used by private and public vehicles operating across the country by one rupee per liter, and to increase the price of electricity consumed by electric vehicles by one rupee per unit.

In addition, he said that a proposal has been submitted to deposit one percent of the third-party insurance premium collected by the insurance company into the Fund, and also for the federal, provincial and local governments to deposit a lump sum amount annually into the Fund.

General Secretary Gautam mentioned that the fund will help provide immediate relief to the victims and manage the medical treatment expenses in the event of a road accident, as in some cases, the insurance amount alone is not enough for it.
In case of serious injuries and the rightful owner is unable to pay compensation the same Fund will be used for the treatment.
