Nuwakot, Sept 12: Post-disaster response efforts, including search and rescue operations, DNA profiling, support at holding centers and the implementation of community-police partnership programmes are continued in the floods affected areas in Nuwakot under the ‘Timure-to-Tribeni’ special operation of Nepal Police.
A team deployed by the Nepal Police Headquarters as part the operation has been working in coordination with the District Traffic Police Office on crime control and investigation, distribution of humanitarian assistance and traffic management following the devastating flash floods that struck the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli river system on August 26.
Search operations are being assisted by sniffer dogs. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Binod Silwal, under the special operation, 65 bodies have been buried since September 4, while DNA tests have been conducted on samples from 46 and one Indian national, totalling 47 individuals.
Of the collected DNA samples, 37 have been already sent to the Nepal Police Central Forensic Science Laboratory, while 10 samples are awaiting dispatch. DNA samples are being collected the Police Level-1 Hospital.
Alongside the retrieval of the remains of those killed in the floods, police have continued search operations for missing people. Similarly, the team is facilitating the supplies of essential materials to Rasuwa district.
Likewise, police squads are retrieving valuable goods and properties from the debris of damaged and buried houses, and structures and handing them over to rightful owners, according to SSP Silwal.
Similarly, monitoring of holding centres and coordination on the situation in affected areas have also been prioritised. Nepal Police has also intensified the rescue of people trapped in tunnels and other precarious areas, restoration of road connectivity, and transportation support for relatives of victims to and from the flood-hit areas.
The Nepal Police Disaster and Coordination Information Management Centre is coordinating necessary support and discussions for the flood-affected areas. Drones have been used for those areas that are inaccessible to sniffer dogs.
