Kathmandu, July 20: A project on Strengthening Agrifood Systems in Nepal has begun in partnership with the Government of Nepal, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and the Government of China.
The 24-month-long project is aimed at strengthening climate-resilient agriculture in hilly and Himalayan regions, improving rural livelihood, and enabling food and nutrition security, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forests and Environment.
The project supported by China’s Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund is expected to enhance capacity of the local institutions, bring reforms in climate-smart agriculture, nutrition growth, digital innovation and inclusive rural development.
On the occasion, Minister for Agriculture, Forests and Environment Geeta Chaudhary said that the project is expected to play crucial role in achieving the national goals of food security, rural revitalization and sustainable development.
Also speaking at the event, Chinese Ambassador to Nepal, Zhang Maoming, pledged China’s continuous support in achieving goals on Nepal’s agricultural modernization and sustainable development.
To be implemented in Kavre and Ilam districts, the project would provide technical counselling to farmers through digital agricultural expansion service, weather information, fiscal service, agriculture insurance and market.
