Kaski, June 10: Pokhara is set to host a week-long Sports Week from June 13 to 19 with the aim of promoting sports culture and identifying emerging athletic talent.
The event is being organized by the Pokhara Metropolitan City Sports Development Committee to make sporting activities more systematic, inclusive and talent-oriented.
The week-long programme will feature competitions ranging from national-level events to grassroots sports.
Committee Chair Deepak Godar said seven sports disciplines have been included in the festival, comprising two national-level competitions and five grassroots-level events.
According to him, the national-level competitions will feature Muay Thai and cycling, while grassroots events will include judo, hockey, full-contact karate and table tennis, among others.
Godar expressed confidence that the grassroots competitions would help identify sporting talent and nurture a new generation of athletes.
He said the initiative aims to provide opportunities to promising local players, contribute to producing future national athletes and strengthen sports culture.
Preparations for the event are currently in full swing, according to the committee.
Member Secretary Suraj Adhikari said additional activities, including a Martial Arts Festival and other sports-related programmes, will also be organized during Sports Week.
Adhikari added that several sporting events, including the President Running Shield, had already been held during the current fiscal year under the Metropolis’s organization and facilitation.
The upcoming Sports Week is expected to provide a platform for sports disciplines that had not been covered earlier.
He said the event also seeks to promote diverse sports and create competitive opportunities for athletes, while the national-level competitions are expected to strengthen Pokhara’s identity as a sports tourism destination.
