Sunsari, July 27 : Authorities in eastern Nepal have imposed an indefinite curfew in parts of Sunsari district after a violent clash left one person dead and several others injured.
The Sunsari District Administration Office said the curfew came into effect from 7:00 a.m. Monday and will remain in place until further notice. The order, issued under Section 6(A) of the Local Administration Act, 1971, prohibits all movement, public gatherings, rallies, demonstrations, meetings and sit-ins within designated areas of Dewanganj and Harinagar rural municipalities.
The restricted zones include parts of Harinagar, Bhutaha, Kaptanganj, Ghuski and Dewanganj market areas, with authorities enforcing the curfew within specified boundaries in each locality.
The move follows a clash between two groups on Sunday night, during which police opened fire to contain the violence.
Om Prakash Mehta, 24, of Kaptanganj in Dewanganj Rural Municipality-3, died after being struck by police gunfire, according to local authorities.
Police said eight protesters were injured in the shooting, while several security personnel also sustained injuries during the unrest.
Security has been tightened across the affected areas, and officials have urged residents to comply with the curfew until the situation returns to normal.
