Kathmandu, April 18 : Bishnu Paudel, vice-chair of Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist), on Saturday said ongoing discussions about leftist unity are “irrelevant,” stressing that the party must focus on reviewing its recent electoral defeat and rebuilding its organization.
In a social media statement, Paudel said the UML’s immediate priority is a serious assessment of what he described as a “worrying” election loss, along with internal restructuring.
“For the CPN (UML), a serious review of the concerning electoral defeat and party reorganization are today’s main agenda,” he said. “Who is pushing this irrelevant discourse on left unity from behind the scenes, and why, by diverting attention from this reality?”
His remarks come amid heightened speculation following a recent meeting between UML Chair K P Sharma Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal, coordinator of the Nepal Communist Party.
Dahal had visited Oli at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital a few days ago while the former prime minister was undergoing treatment. Reports said the two leaders discussed the prospect of left unity, though neither has publicly confirmed the details.
Meanwhile, Paudel and UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel are reported to be in agreement on the need for party restructuring.
