Kathmandu, Aug 26: The influx of foreign tourists entering Nepal through Gaddachauki, the western border point in Kanchanpur, is on the rise.
According to the Immigration Office in Gaddachauki, there’s been a noticeable increase in tourist arrivals over the past few years. Last fiscal year alone, 1,753 foreign visitors crossed into Nepal. Navraj Adhikari shared that this has generated a revenue of Rs 1, 50,118.
He also noted that 1,534 tourists have departed from this border point. In 2022, 542 tourists visited, while the numbers grew to 983 in 2023 and 1,154 in 2024. Despite the vast tourism potential in the far-west region, many visitors from Gaddachauki tend to head towards popular cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara.
The far-west boasts stunning destinations such as Khaptad, Badimalika, and Ramaroshnan Shuklaphanta National Park, but the lack of infrastructure and promotion often drives tourists to other areas. “Gaddachauki is a key entry point for foreign tourists, especially those from India who are close to the city,” remarked tourism entrepreneur Jagdish Chandra Bhatt.
He emphasized the need for a tourism information desk right at the border to assist incoming tourists with details about various attractions in Nepal, particularly in the far-west. Bhatt stressed that both the private sector and the government should collaborate to enhance tourism efforts.
Dinesh Malla, president of the FNCC Kanchanpur chapter, echoed this sentiment, pointing out that while the far-west has great tourism potential, inadequate infrastructure and lack of publicity often lead tourists to choose other destinations.
“We need better infrastructure and facilities to make these attractive spots accessible,” he said, “and we must create an inviting atmosphere for tourists to stay overnight and explore our beautiful destinations.”
