Kathmandu, Sept 4; The Xizang Autonomous Region of China has provided Nepal with emergency relief assistance, including materials sufficient to assemble two Bailey bridges, to support rescue, relief and the restoration of transportation links in flood- and landslide-affected areas.
According to the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu, the relief supplies from the Xizang Autonomous Region were officially handed over to Nepal on Friday at Rizi Port in Shigatse, China.
A bilingual banner in Chinese and Nepali at the handover site read: “Shared Mountains, Shared Rivers — United in Weal and Woe: Xizang Rushes to Nepal’s Aid.” According to the Embassy, the message represents the solidarity and mutual support between the peoples of China and Nepal during times of disaster.
The Chinese Embassy said the aid shipment primarily consists of specialized bridge-building materials, including Bailey panels, reinforced suspension rods, support frames, bridge decking and I-beams, sufficient to assemble two Bailey bridges.
The materials will be used to help restore vital transportation links in areas of Nepal affected by recent floods and mudslides and to support rescue and relief operations, according to the Embassy.
A separate handover ceremony was also held in Lhasa on the same day between the Foreign Affairs Office of the Xizang Autonomous Region and the Consulate General of Nepal in Lhasa, the Embassy said.
Nepal’s Consul General in Lhasa, Lakshmi Prasad Niraula, signed the handover certificate on behalf of the Nepali side.
According to the Chinese Embassy, the Nepali side expressed heartfelt gratitude for China’s swift response and assistance following the disaster. Nepal noted that the timely assistance from the Xizang Autonomous Region demonstrated the deep friendship between the two sides, which are connected by shared mountains and rivers and united in times of hardship.
The assistance was described as a vivid example of the friendship and mutual support between Nepal and China and as a practical expression of the vision of building a China-Nepal community with a shared future, according to the Embassy.
Following the devastating floods and landslides in Nepal, China has been providing emergency relief and humanitarian assistance through various channels. The latest assistance from the Xizang Autonomous Region adds essential bridge-building materials to the broader Chinese disaster relief support for Nepal.
