Kathmandu, Aug 31: The Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation has appointed Surendra Bajracharya as the chairman of the Shree Bouddhanath Area Development Committee.
Similarly, Acharya Nurbu Sherpa is appointed as executive director to the committee. The committee also includes members Khenpo Shennang Gyamjo Tamang, Bishal Lama, and Roshan Kumar Shrestha.
Established in 2053 BS under the Development Committee Act of 2013, the Bouddhanath Committee is responsible for overseeing plans and programmes related to Buddhism, as well as coordinating with various national and international entities.
Bouddhanath, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, is a significant centre for Buddhism globally and attracts numerous visitors. The committee’s duties encompass the management and promotion of the Bouddhanath Mahachaitya, its surrounding areas, and the overall advancement of Buddhist practices and tourism.
Historically known as Khasti Chaitya, the Bouddhanath Stupa (Temple) is a renowned pilgrimage site for both Buddhist and Hindu devotees, further solidifying its importance in the cultural and spiritual landscape of Nepal.
