Kathmandu, Aug 14: Home Minister Sudhan Gurung has said that the process of withdrawing cases registered during the Gen Z movement will be taken forward seriously.
He made it clear that innocent people would not be dragged into cases based on prejudice or with revenge motive, and that no one should get away in cases of heinous crimes.
Speaking in the meeting of the House of Representatives, Law, Justice and Human Rights Committee today, he informed that a committee has been formed to study the withdrawal of cases according to Section 8 of the Directive on Withdrawing Criminal Cases, 2066, in which the government acts as the plaintiff.
“The committee is investigating seriously and carefully, so it won’t take much longer,” Home Minister Gurung said, adding that they are serious about making sure no innocent person suffers due to delays in the process and that no one takes revenge by abusing power.
He said that the ministry has prioritized amending the relevant act based on the suggestions and the report given by the committee. He mentioned that it is necessary to make the act timely.
The Home Minister stated that there is a big gap between the capacity of prisons and the number of inmates. He informed the committee that there are about 28 thousand inmates at present, while the prison capacity is only around 19 thousand, and that the conditions of various prisons will be studied and the necessary budget arranged for physical infrastructure development.
Minister Gurung mentioned that financially weak prisoners are being provided free legal assistance through government lawyers and that a proposal has been submitted to the Council of Ministers to amend the prison-related regulations.
He mentioned that prioritizing the improvement of the prison’s physical structure, a budget has also been allocated for it.
Home Minister Gurung expressed dissatisfaction in the committee meeting over the way the Home Ministry secretary and police officials acted based on complaints.
He made it clear that no one should be found guilty just because of a complaint, and that nobody’s character should be destroyed until the allegations are proven.
