Anti-MCC demonstrations continue in capital Kathmandu as govt makes final preparations to ratify deal

Kathmandu, Feb 27: Cadres of various political parties have continued with protests against tabling and possible ratification of Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact in the House of Representatives of Nepal.

The demonstrations are ongoing Sunday amid ruling coalition partners’ last leg of preparations to endorse the deal from parliament.

Meanwhile, security measures have been beefed up in various ‘sensitive’ areas of the capital Kathmandu city including in and around Federal Parliament building at Baneshwor, Singhadurbar and Baluwatar (PM Official residence).

Coalition partners Nepali Congress, CPN (Maoist Centre), CPN (Unified Socialist) and Janata Samajwadi Party reached an agreement Sunday after weeks of inter-party and intra-party deliberations to ratify the US-grant from parliament.

The alliance political parties other than Nepali Congress were opposed to ratification of the MCC, while their sister-wings have been staging protests on the streets against the same.
