The meeting concluded that arresting journalists for gathering and publishing news and deploying police inside media offices were against press freedom and the rule of law.<\/p>\n<p>The party said police deployment inside newsrooms without clearly establishing legal grounds for arrest or obtaining court authorization reflected arbitrary government action. It called for an impartial investigation and legal action against those found responsible.<\/p>\n<p>The Congress also urged the government to respect constitutional and legal boundaries, stating that an electoral mandate does not give the government the authority to interfere with citizens&#8217; rights, constitutional institutions or the independence of the judiciary.<\/p>\n<p>Congress Parliamentary Party leader Bhishmaraj Angdembe said the party would consult other opposition parties to develop a common position on the recent developments.<\/p>\n<p>He said a high-level parliamentary committee was necessary to investigate the disputed incidents.
