According to the latest status report from the Family Welfare Division under the Ministry of Health and Food Safety, 1,372 cases of acute encephalitis syndrome have been recorded in Nepal so far in 2026, with Japanese encephalitis (JE) confirmed in 131 of these cases.<\/p>\n<p>The Division reported that 28 people have died due to JE infection. The report notes that 87 per cent of those infected were unvaccinated. The JE infections have been confirmed across 90 local levels in 37 districts. The Division&#8217;s report indicates that the majority of infected individuals reside near paddy fields or pig farms and are engaged in agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>The government is continuing its JE vaccination campaign in the affected districts. Currently, the campaign is underway in all local levels of Jhapa district, as well as in Ghodaghodi Municipality, Dhangadhi Sub-metropolitan City, and Lamkichuha Municipality of Kailali district. The campaign targets individuals aged 30 years and above, as well as health workers.<\/p>\n<p>So far, 111,790 people in Kailali and 346,777 people in Jhapa have received the JE vaccine. Under the routine immunization program, the government administers a single dose of the JE vaccine at 12 months of age; however, provisions exist to administer the vaccine up to the age of five if the initial dose was missed.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors state that to prevent Japanese Encephalitis (JE), one must protect oneself against mosquito bites in addition to getting vaccinated.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kathmandu, Oct 3: Japanese encephalitis infection has been confirmed in 131 individuals to date.
