Kathmandu, Sept 28: Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Environment Geeta Chaudhary has expressed that Nepal’s stance on climate justice will be more powerfully articulated in international forums, including COP-31, by enhancing mountain diplomacy in the near future.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the seminar titled ‘Mountain Diplomacy for Climate Justice’ on Sunday, she highlighted that this issue is crucial not just for Nepal, but for all mountainous and low-lying coastal nations around the globe, as well as for the planet as a whole.<\/p>\n

“The Himalayas serve as a vital life support system for our planet. They provide water, ecosystems, agriculture, and livelihoods for billions of people far beyond Nepal,” Minister Chaudhary stated. She pointed out that mountains are currently at the forefront of climate change, with increasing risks of mountain floods, landslides, glacier explosions, and melting glaciers. She emphasized that climate change is disrupting the fragile Himalayan ecosystem. According to her, mountain diplomacy is essential for uniting the voices of Himalayan countries. Despite Nepal’s minimal contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions (less than 0.1%), she noted that the country is facing the impacts of climate change in alarming ways, which she described as unjust and inequitable. “This inequality forms the moral foundation of Nepal’s climate diplomacy. We are not seeking sympathy; we are demanding climate justice and accountability,” Minister Chaudhary asserted. She underscored the importance of prioritizing those affected when discussing climate justice. She also mentioned the tragic Bhotekoshi flood, which claimed around 1,400 lives and left over 6,000 people missing, stating that continuous search efforts, proper assistance, shelter, health services, and safe recovery and rehabilitation must be the top priorities.<\/p>\n

Minister Chaudhary expressed her concern that the floods have devastated affected communities and essential infrastructure, urging that international aid should reach those in need without further burdening a country already grappling with significant damage. She emphasized, “In the reconstruction efforts, we must prioritize children, women, and the disabled, alongside the rehabilitation of roads, bridges, schools, health facilities, and hydropower projects. We also need to implement safe plans, robust early warning systems, and develop infrastructure that can withstand disasters.”<\/p>\n

Highlighting the importance of regional cooperation in monitoring, early warning, and preparedness as a shared security concern, she stressed the need for a Himalayan Climate Resilience Mechanism involving China, Nepal, and India, echoing Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s remarks at the United Nations General Assembly.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, she called on countries with historical responsibilities and resources to provide financial support for recovery and the development of disaster-resilient capabilities. Minister Chaudhary pointed out that national capacity should be bolstered through climate-friendly budgets, climate-smart infrastructure, localized risk information, and nature-based solutions. She firmly stated that climate justice is not a privilege but a right, asserting, “Climate finance is not merely a matter of cooperation; it is a just obligation, and the challenges facing the mountains are not just Nepal’s\u2014they concern the entire world.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
