Kathmandu, Aug 5: Finance Minister Dr Swarnim Wagle has said that the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) should move forward not just as a regulatory institution, but as a partner and co-creator of Nepal’s economic transformation.<\/p>\n

In a discussion today at the Ministry of Finance with the NRB executive directors, he expressed the view that the central bank should actively play the role of a partner in the country’s economic transformation, along with its role as a regulatory body.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday’s discussion won’t be limited to just formal remarks. Every issue raised here will be converted into an action plan. If needed, we will form a joint task force, institutionalize policy coordination, and make the decision-making process even more efficient,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Stating that they have a rare opportunity right now as there is political will for reform, the Finance Minister said, “The foundation for economic stability is in place. The private sector is ready for opportunities. Now, the state institutions also need to move forward with the same confidence, clarity, and pace. If the government, Nepal Rastra Bank, the banking sector, and the private sector move in the same direction, Nepal’s economic transformation won\u2019t just remain a dream\u2014it will enter the phase of implementation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Finance Minister Wagle urged the executive directors to give suggestions on the necessary policy initiatives so that Nepal Rastra Bank can make the economic reforms announced by the government successful.<\/p>\n

He expressed special interest in how loan disbursement can be increased in the production-oriented sector.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow can the excess liquidity in the banking system be transformed into production, industry, and employment? How can a healthy relationship be built between the capital market, real estate, banking system, and the real economy? Also, share some information on how to make the coordination between monetary policy and fiscal policy more effective, and how to facilitate digital finance, fintech, alternative finance, startup financing, and new financial instruments,\u201d said the Finance Minister.<\/p>\n

He emphasized that the purpose of regulation should not just be to control, but to enable productive economic activities.<\/p>\n

Minister Dr Wagle mentioned that it’s time to ask ourselves whether Nepal’s regulatory system is hindering or encouraging innovation.<\/p>\n

“Let’s discuss not from the mindset of ‘this is impossible,’ but from ‘what should we do to make it possible,'” he said, adding that what the country needed the most is policy confidence.<\/p>\n

Finance Minister Wagle said that if the government and Nepal Rastra Bank are self-confident, the banking system and private sector will also become confident, which will, in turn, make it easier to achieve economic growth.<\/p>\n

“On behalf of the government, we have clearly taken our responsibility. The process of reform has already started. We are speeding up the necessary legal amendments, institutional reforms, and implementation,” he said, adding that now the same pace, clarity, and commitment is needed from the monetary side as well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
