{"id":18631,"date":"2025-03-01T16:40:40","date_gmt":"2025-03-01T10:55:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nepalsamaj.com\/en\/?p=18631"},"modified":"2025-03-01T16:40:40","modified_gmt":"2025-03-01T10:55:40","slug":"rescuers-search-for-eight-workers-after-avalanche-in-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nepalsamaj.com\/en\/rescuers-search-for-eight-workers-after-avalanche-in-india\/","title":{"rendered":"Rescuers search for eight workers after avalanche in India"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Search teams in northern India had rescued 47 people trapped after an avalanche hit a remote border area but were still searching for eight more, officials said Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 55 workers were buried under snow and debris after the avalanche hit a construction camp near a village on the border with Tibet in Chamoli district on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Uttarakhand state chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said &#8220;relief and rescue operations have been accelerated&#8221; with the weather in the area clearing up.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every effort is being made to safely evacuate all the workers trapped in the snow as soon as possible,&#8221; Dhami said on X.<\/p>\n<p>Local police said in a statement Saturday that 47 had been pulled from the rubble but rescuers were still looking for the remaining eight.<\/p>\n<p>They said army doctors at the site had performed life-saving surgery on those critically injured.<br \/>\nMana village, which shares a border with Tibet, was deserted after residents moved to lower altitudes to escape the extreme weather, The Indian Express newspaper reported.<\/p>\n<p>Avalanches and landslides are common in the upper reaches of the Himalayas, especially during the winter season.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists have said that climate change spurred by humans burning fossil fuels is making weather events more severe, super-charged by warmer oceans.<\/p>\n<p>The increased pace of development in the fragile Himalayan regions has also heightened fears about the fallout from deforestation and construction.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, nearly 100 people died in Uttarakhand after a huge glacier chunk fell into a river, triggering flash floods.<\/p>\n<p>And devastating monsoon floods and landslides in 2013 killed 6,000 people and led to calls for a review of development projects in the state.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Search teams in northern India had rescued 47 people trapped after an avalanche hit a remote border area but were still searching for eight more, officials said Saturday.
