{"id":16363,"date":"2025-01-23T14:04:12","date_gmt":"2025-01-23T08:19:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nepalsamaj.com\/en\/?p=16363"},"modified":"2025-01-23T14:04:12","modified_gmt":"2025-01-23T08:19:12","slug":"vietnam-police-smash-1-2-billion-money-laundering-ring","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nepalsamaj.com\/en\/vietnam-police-smash-1-2-billion-money-laundering-ring\/","title":{"rendered":"Vietnam police smash $1.2-billion money-laundering ring"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Vietnam police said they had arrested five people and smashed a money-laundering ring that brought $1.2 billion of criminal cash into the country from abroad.<\/p>\n<p>Between 2022 and 2024, members of the ring &#8212; which included bank employees &#8212; forged identification cards and bank seals to establish 187 businesses, opening more than 600 corporate bank accounts.<\/p>\n<p>The accounts were used to transfer and legalise money that had been obtained through fraud or gambling abroad, police said in a statement Wednesday, adding that total transactions amounted to around $1.2 billion (30,000 billion dong).<\/p>\n<p>The arrests &#8212; including one bank employee &#8212; were made in Danang, where police said it was the biggest money laundering case ever exposed in the central coastal city.<\/p>\n<p>Police have seized 122 fake seals and original copies of 40 business registration certificates.<\/p>\n<p>In October, Vietnamese property tycoon Truong My Lan was jailed for life on money laundering charges, although she is appealing the verdict.<\/p>\n<p>The property developer had already been handed the death penalty for fraud totalling $27 billion in a separate case.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Vietnam police said they had arrested five people and smashed a money-laundering ring that brought $1.2 billion of criminal cash into the country from abroad.
