{"id":11545,"date":"2024-11-01T18:51:49","date_gmt":"2024-11-01T13:06:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nepalsamaj.com\/en\/?p=11545"},"modified":"2024-11-01T18:51:49","modified_gmt":"2024-11-01T13:06:49","slug":"bangladesh-party-decries-protesters-after-offices-torched","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nepalsamaj.com\/en\/bangladesh-party-decries-protesters-after-offices-torched\/","title":{"rendered":"Bangladesh party decries protesters after offices torched"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>A Bangladeshi party formerly close to the regime ousted by a student-led revolution said Friday that such protesters were &#8220;splitting&#8221; the nation, a day after a mob torched its offices.<\/p>\n<p>Jatiya Party chief Ghulam Muhammed Quader, a former commerce minister under toppled ex-leader Sheikh Hasina, said the offices were burned down in an arson attack by furious protesters late on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The country is now divided&#8221;, Quader told reporters in Dhaka.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They disregard everyone else, splitting the country into &#8216;pure&#8217; and &#8216;impure&#8217; factions&#8230; They determine who is culpable and who is not, leaving no room for justification. Once they tag someone as culpable, it&#8217;s final.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Quader&#8217;s Jatiya Party was criticised for taking part in elections in January boycotted by the main opposition, and in which Hasina won a fourth consecutive term.<\/p>\n<p>Hasina&#8217;s rule saw widespread human rights abuses, including the mass detention and extrajudicial killings of her political opponents.<\/p>\n<p>She fled to India by helicopter on August 5 after months of protests against her 15-year autocratic rule.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the top student protest leaders are now part of the cabinet of the interim government, which is led by Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of Hasina&#8217;s loyalists have since been detained.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They decide everything &#8212; they can vandalise, set fire to our offices, and remain above the law,&#8221; Quader said, without specifying names.<\/p>\n<p>Hasnat Abdullah, convener of Students Against Discrimination, the protest group credited with sparking the uprising against Hasina, had on Thursday urged supporters to march on the Jatiya Party offices.<\/p>\n<p>He called on students in a social media post to &#8220;annihilate the national traitor&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>But the group&#8217;s spokeswoman, Umama Fatema, said it did not condone the breaking of any law.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The responsibility lies on individuals who joined the march,&#8221; she said Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Senior police officer Talebur Rahman said that no one had filed a case concerning the arson attack.<\/p>\n<p>The incident came days after UN rights chief Volker Turk praised students in Dhaka for their &#8220;courage in standing up for justice&#8221;, while warning that they must also take care of the risks ahead.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Beware of the idea that the ends justify the means,&#8221; Turk said in a speech at Dhaka University on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The process through which you seek change is just as crucial as the outcome.
