Kathmandu, March 30: The Supreme Court on Monday issued a show cause order in response to a habeas corpus petition filed on behalf of former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, directing authorities to explain the grounds for his arrest.
A single bench of Justice Kumar Regmi ordered the concerned authorities to submit a written clarification justifying why Lekhak was taken into custody.
The petition, filed on Sunday, argues that Lekhak has been detained unlawfully. He was arrested on Saturday for investigation into incidents related to the Gen Z protest movement that took place on Bhadra 23 and 24.
The Commission of Inquiry had recommended legal action against Lekhak, holding him responsible for the crackdown during the protests. Acting on the commission’s report, the current government moved to arrest the then Home Minister.
