NHRC calls for protection and promotion of migrant workers’ rights

Kathmandu, Dec 18: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged the government for sufficient investment and adequate legislative provisions to safeguard the rights and welfare of migrant workers.

Issuing a press statement on the International Migrants Day today, the Commission underscored the need to address the current labour migration issues through enabling policies and legislation.
“The Commission urges the government and all concerned stakeholders to take initiatives for a safe, regular and orderly migration as well as to protect the rights of the female domestic workers abroad,” read the statement issued by Commission’s Spokesperson, Dr Tikaram Pokharel.

The NHRC has also asked the stakeholders to meaningfully contribute in ensuring safe and orderly migration.

Despite significant contributions of migrant workers towards ensuring socioeconomic development, the Commission voiced its concern over the current dismal state of labour management thereby pressed for an effective labour management.

The Commission has been actively working in protecting and promoting migrant workers’ rights through various measures and initiatives such as monitoring of the observance of human rights, conducting research, receiving and addressing complaints and inking bilateral agreements with the human rights agencies in the labour destinations countries.

The United Nations estimates that there around 281 million people international migrants, constituting 3.6 per cent of the global population

The International Migrants Day, observed globally including in Nepal on December 18 every year, serves as a reminder of the invaluable contributions of millions of migrant workers worldwide as well as sheds light on the problems and challenges facing the migrants.

This year’s theme for the International Migrants Day is-‘Honouring the Contributions of Migrants and Respecting their Rights’.
