Kathmandu, Feb 11: The ‘Media Council Bill-2080 BS’, which originated in the National Assembly (NA), has been tabled in the House of Representatives (HoR) on Tuesday.
Secretary of the HoR Harkaraj Rai tabled the Bill in the meeting of HoR. Along with the Bill, a message in regard to the Bill was also presented in the meeting.
The then Minister for Communications and Information Technology Rekha Sharma had registered the Bill in the NA on May 26, 2024, citing it was for transforming existing Press Council Nepal into the Media Council and develop it as an autonomous regulatory entity.
Additionally, the Bill aims to develop and promote free, independent and accountable journalism as well as to make the digital, online and print journalism more decent and credible.
It may be noted that general deliberation was held on the Bill on June 2 followed by a clause-wise deliberation in the NA. The Bill was sent to the relevant parliamentary committee on June 10, 2024.
The Bill has made it to the HoR after the committee submitted its report on the Bill on Jan 31, 2025.
