Kathmandu, June 9: The main opposition party, CPN (Maoist Centre), has called on Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak to step aside in order to facilitate an impartial investigation into the recent visit visa scandal.
Speaking during an emergency session of the National Assembly on Sunday, Maoist Centre lawmaker Suresh Ale Magar argued that a fair investigation cannot take place while Lekhak continues to oversee the very agencies responsible for the probe.
“We also believe that the Home Minister may not be directly involved in wrongdoing, but actions and facts do not support that assumption,” Ale Magar said. “If he truly considers himself ethical and honest, he should clear the way and allow the investigation to proceed without interference.”
He further questioned the government’s decision to appoint officials previously linked to other scandals to sensitive positions such as immigration at Tribhuvan International Airport.
The Maoist Centre’s remarks come amid growing pressure on the government to address concerns over irregularities in the issuance of visit visas.
