Makuna shooting scam: Govt. forms probe committee

Kathmandu, Feb 6: The government has formed a probe committee on the shooting of wild elephant named ‘Makuna’ at Kumroj buffer zone in Chitwan National Park (CNP).
Director General of the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation, Dr Ram Chandra Kandel, said a five-member probe committee has been formed under the coordination of Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Forest and Environment Buddhi Sagar Paudel.

Director General Kandel said that the committee comprises one representative each from the Forest Department, Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation, Nepal Army and a veterinarian from Chitwan.

The CNP sources informed that the wild tusker (Makuna) was killed when the Nepal Army opened fire in self-defense after the mammoth bounced on other elephants and humans while trying to send it to the park in Lamital area of Kumroj Community Forest on Wednesday.

In a statement issued today, the CNP said that as per the provisions of Section 21 of the National Park and Wildlife Conservation Act 2029, the team fired two rounds in the air as a warning.

Instead of running away, the small elephant came towards Khagendra Prasad, it was stated.

The firing had to be made when it was very difficult to save the life of on-duty Ranger Shyam Tamang who fell down on the floor, the release noted.
