Guru of classical music, Gurdev Kamat, passes away

Kathmandu, Aug 1: A renowned name in the field of Nepali classical music, Gurudev Kamat, passed away today. He was 69.

Suffering from kidney disease for the past few months, Gurudev Kamat underwent treatment in Kathmandu for few times, but returned to his birthplace—Pokharbhinda of Siraha – after not being able to undergo further treatment due to financial problem.

He underwent dialysis at Lahan Hospital after returning to his birthplace two weeks ago. His health deteriorated since the past three days, said a poet Mukunda Poudel, who is close to Gurudev.
Poet Poudel as well as artist Radheshyam Bishwokarma, singer Prabhat Sagar, among others, had been taking initiatives to collect fund to help Gurudev’s kidney transplantation.

Gurudev is survived by a spouse, three sons and a daughter. Gurudev’s last rites would be performed in his home village, added Poudel. Classical music maestro, Kamat, is renowned in Nepal and India.
