Kathmandu June 5 : Former Prime Minister and Chairperson of the CPN (Unified Socialist), Madhav Kumar Nepal, has been suspended from his position as a Member of Parliament after the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) filed a corruption case against him.
The CIAA on Thursday registered the case at the Special Court in connection with a controversial land exchange deal involving the Indian company Patanjali, led by Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna. The charges allege that Nepal, during his tenure as prime minister, abused his authority to facilitate the illegal transfer and resale of land acquired under special exemptions.
With the registration of the case, Nepal’s suspension came into effect automatically as per legal provisions. Under Section 13 of the CIAA Act (1991) and the Prevention of Corruption Act (2002), any public office bearer charged in a corruption case is immediately suspended from their official duties.
The case accuses Nepal of authorizing Patanjali to purchase 593 ropanis of land in Banepa, Kavre, under land ceiling exemptions, and of granting permission to resell 353 ropanis of that land to a housing company within just two months — an act considered unlawful by the CIAA.
The case marks a significant development in Nepal’s political and legal landscape, drawing widespread public and political attention.
