England crowned UEFA Women’s Euro champions after beating Spain in penalty shootout

Agency, July 28: England have clinched the UEFA Women’s Euro title, defeating Spain 3-1 in a dramatic penalty shootout in the final held on Sunday night. The match, played at St. Jakob-Park, ended 1-1 after regular and extra time, sending the game into penalties to decide the champion.

In the shootout, Chloe Kelly, Niamh Charles, and Alex Greenwood scored for England, while Beth Mead and Leah Williamson missed their chances. For Spain, only Patricia Guijarro managed to convert her penalty, as the rest of the Spanish players failed to find the net.

Spain had initially taken the lead in the 25th minute through Mariona Caldentey, giving them an early advantage. However, England equalized in the 57th minute with a goal from Alessia Russo, leveling the match at 1-1. Despite chances on both sides, no further goals came in the remainder of regulation or the 30 minutes of extra time, leading to the decisive shootout.

With this victory, England have secured back-to-back Women’s Euro titles. They previously lifted their first title in 2022 after defeating Germany 2-1 in the final.
