Dr Bhattarai quits chair post of Nepal Samajbadi Party

Kathmandu, Sept 25: Chairperson of the Nepal Samajbadi Party (Naya Shakti) and former Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai announced that he quit from the party leadership today.

Speaking at a press conference in Kathmandu, Dr Bhattarai said he decided to step down to make way for a new generation of leaders in the current political context.
“Leadership transfer within political parties is essential. I have decided to quit as chairperson to allow the younger generation to take charge. However, I will continue working to build an alternative political force and promote social transformation,” he said.

He expressed support for the recent Gen Z movement for good governance, calling it genuine. However, he accused some leaders and external groups of attempting to discredit the movement.

Dr Bhattarai also urged young people to build national pressure to hold corrupt political leaders accountable. “Corruption must be investigated and punished, regardless of who is involved,” he said.

He further called for constitutional amendments to introduce a directly elected executive system, warning that the country could face a deeper crisis without reforms in the electoral and governance system.

The leader encouraged Gen Z groups to participate and compete in the upcoming House of Representatives (HoR) elections scheduled for March 5, 2025, and to claim leadership.
