Thapa Withdraws Candidacy Amid Questions Over Japan Property and Family PR

Kathmandu, Nov, 2: Gyan Kumar Thapa, who had been proposed for appointment as Nepal’s ambassador to Japan, has withdrawn his nomination following questions raised during the parliamentary hearing over his property in Japan and the permanent residency (PR) status of his family members.

Thapa sent a letter to the Parliamentary Hearing Committee on Monday, formally requesting the withdrawal of his name. Committee Chairperson Bodh Narayan Shrestha read out the letter during Monday’s meeting.

Thapa had appeared before the committee for a parliamentary hearing on October 14. During the hearing, lawmakers raised questions about his stay in Japan, his property there and the permanent residency status of his family members.

The hearing was subsequently postponed to allow further scrutiny after lawmakers questioned whether Thapa himself held permanent residency in Japan.

Of the 13 ambassadorial nominees recommended for appointment, the committee had approved only 10 during that round of hearings.

The committee had rejected the nominations of Giribahadur Sunar, proposed as ambassador to Saudi Arabia, and Chudamani Kharel, proposed as ambassador to Malaysia
