Madrid, Sep 21: Atlético Madrid secured a 2-1 victory over 10-man Real Madrid in the Madrid derby at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Sunday, handing their city rivals their second defeat of the LaLiga season.
The first half ended goalless, but the match changed dramatically early in the second half when Real Madrid defender Dean Huijsen was sent off after conceding a penalty for a foul on Giuliano Simeone inside the box.
Alejandro Grimaldo converted the resulting penalty in the 52nd minute to give Atlético the lead. Six minutes later, Jonathan David doubled the hosts’ advantage, finishing from Giuliano Simeone’s low cross to make it 2-0.
Real Madrid managed to pull one goal back in the 89th minute when Antonio Rüdiger headed Bernardo Silva’s cross past Atlético goalkeeper Jan Oblak. However, Madrid could not find an equalizer as Atlético held on for all three points.
The victory moved Atlético Madrid up to second place with 16 points from seven matches, while Real Madrid remained on 15 points. Atlético are five points behind leaders Barcelona and one point ahead of Real Madrid.
