Agency, Aug 13: French giants Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) have won the UEFA Super Cup, defeating Aston Villa 2–1 on Wednesday night to claim the trophy for the second consecutive year.
Paris Saint-Germain secured the victory at the Red Bull Arena, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Désiré Doué scoring once each. Brian Madjo scored Villa’s only goal.
PSG took the lead in the 20th minute when Kvaratskhelia finished from a pass by Doué. Aston Villa responded just before halftime, with Madjo finding the net in the 45th minute to level the score at 1–1.
PSG restored their lead in the 61st minute. Ousmane Dembélé set up Doué, who calmly converted to make it 2–1.
Neither side could add to the score in the remaining minutes, as PSG held on to secure another UEFA Super Cup triumph.
UEFA Super Cup is contested between the winners of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League. PSG had won the Champions League last season after defeating Arsenal on penalties, while Aston Villa claimed the Europa League title with a 3–0 victory over Freiburg.
