Bhadrapur, Aug 8: With imports via the Kakarvitta point in Kakarvitta of Jhapa increasing, the trade deficit has also widened.
According to data from the Mechi Customs Office, the trade deficit last fiscal 2082/83 BS (2025-26) increased by 40.85 percent, reaching Rs 36.38 billion.
By mid-July of fiscal year 2081/ 82 BS (2024-25), the trade deficit stood at Rs 25.83 billion. It increased by Rs 10.55 billion to reach Rs 36.38 billion in the last fiscal year.
During the same period, imports through the eastern customs point increased by 22.71 percent to reach a total of Rs 62.68 billion. Likewise, exports increased by Rs 4.15 percent to reach Rs 26.30 billion.
With the dominance of imports, the total trade volume through the eastern customs point has increased significantly. It rose by 16. 57 percent to reach 88. 99 billion last fiscal year.
The import-export ratio shows that imports amounted to Rs 2.02 for every Re 1 worth of exports in the fiscal year 2081/ 82 BS. This ratio increased to Rs 2.38 for every Re 1 worth of exports in the last fiscal year.
The share of exports in the total trade volume decreased from 33.08 percent to 29.56 percent, while the share of imports increased from 66.92 percent to reach 70.44 percent.
