Gorkha, June 29: A new peak named Lumbo has been identified surrounding the Ganesh Himal (mountain) in Gorkha.
This peak was recognised after a team comprising Nepali and American mountaineers scaled it recently. Before this, it remained unclimbed.
According to international mountaineering guide Tulsi Singh Gurung, the peak measuring 6,250-meter-high lies in the Ganesh Himal range near the border of Chumanubri and Dharche rural municipalities in the district. The team successfully climbed it recently, marking the first certified ascent of the peak. The team’s expedition was facilitated by the Himalaya Summit Club and it reached atop the mountain on June 22 by fixing a route from the south-west face of the mountain after many days of exploration and technical climbing.
The team consists of international mountaineering guides Tulsingh Gurung, Sujal Gurung and Ash Bahadur Gurung from Laprak in Gorkha and American mountaineer Eric Matthew Sue.
This marks the first certified ascent of Lumbo Himal, that lies in Dharche Rural Municipality, on the northern edge of the Manaslu Conservation Area and south of the Ganesh Himal Range.
The peak lies in a remote valley with no settlements, tea shops, or established trekking routes. According to the team, the expedition began with a four-day trek along the Manaslu trekking route before establishing a base camp at 4,150 meters and a high camp at 5,049 meters.
According to guide Tulsingh Gurung, the team decided to ascent the peak from the south-west face after assessing the snow, rock and ice conditions.
Team member Sujal Gurung said the ascent to the summit took them around 20 hours. Climbing a peak above 6,000 meters is required before attempting an expedition to a mountain above 8,000 meters.
With its identification, there is a high probability that Lumbo may be the preferred peak for climbing before attempting to scale the Mount Manaslu.
