Agency, March 30: Mumbai Indians secured a historic victory in the Indian Premier League (IPL) after defeating Kolkata Knight Riders by six wickets on Sunday night.
The win was especially significant for Mumbai, as they registered victory in their opening IPL match for the first time in 14 years.
Chasing a massive 221-run target, Mumbai produced a sensational batting display to reach 224/4 in 19.1 overs.
Mumbai’s successful chase was built around superb half-centuries from Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton.
Rickelton was the standout performer with a blistering 81 off 43 balls, smashing eight sixes and four fours. Rohit also played a brilliant knock of 78 off just 38 deliveries, striking six fours and six sixes.
Tilak Varma contributed 20 runs, while captain Hardik Pandya remained unbeaten on 18. Naman Dhir stayed not out on 5 to help Mumbai cross the line in style.
For Kolkata, Vaibhav Arora, Kartik Tyagi, and Sunil Narine claimed one wicket each.
Earlier, after being asked to bat first at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Kolkata posted a formidable 220/4 in 20 overs.
Captain Ajinkya Rahane led from the front with a fine 67 off 40 balls, hitting six sixes and three fours, while Angkrish Raghuvanshi added an impressive 51 off 29 balls, including six fours and two sixes.
Finn Allen chipped in with 37, Rinku Singh remained unbeaten on 33, Cameron Green scored 18, and Ramandeep Singh managed 4 runs.
For Mumbai, Shardul Thakur was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Hardik Pandya took one.
