Agency, March 19: Barcelona have booked their place in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals after thrashing Newcastle United 7-2 in the second leg of their Round of 16 clash on Wednesday night, sealing an emphatic 8-3 aggregate victory.
Playing at Spotify Camp Nou, Barcelona delivered a dominant attacking display. Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski each scored twice, while Marc Bernal, Lamine Yamal, and Fermin Lopez added one goal apiece. For Newcastle, Anthony Elanga netted both goals.
Barcelona made a flying start, with Raphinha opening the scoring in the 6th minute to hand the hosts an early lead in the second leg.
Newcastle responded quickly, as Elanga equalized in the 15th minute to make it 1-1. However, Barcelona regained the advantage just three minutes later when Marc Bernal found the net in the 18th minute.
Elanga struck again in the 28th minute, scoring his second of the night to bring Newcastle level at 2-2. But Barcelona restored their lead in first-half stoppage time when Lamine Yamal converted from the penalty spot, giving the Spanish giants a 3-2 lead at the break.
Barcelona took complete control in the second half. Fermin Lopez extended the lead in the 51st minute before Robert Lewandowski added Barcelona’s fifth in the 56th minute. The Polish striker struck again just five minutes later to make it 6-2.
Raphinha then completed the scoring in the 72nd minute, netting his second goal of the match as Barcelona cruised to a 7-2 win on the night and an 8-3 aggregate triumph. The first leg had ended in a 1-1 draw.
With the victory, Barcelona advance to the quarter-finals, where they will face fellow Spanish side Atletico Madrid. Atletico secured their spot in the last eight after defeating Tottenham Hotspur 7-5 on aggregate in the Round of 16.
