Nepali fugitive who issued death threats to top officials arrested in Philippines

Kathmandu, Jan 3: Prakash Pathak, a Nepali national accused of issuing death threats against senior government officials from abroad, has been arrested in the Philippines.

According to the Philippine News Agency, the Bureau of Immigration apprehended Pathak on December 31 in Barangay Catmon, Malolos City of Bulacan province. He is currently being held in the bureau’s custody.

Authorities said preparations are underway to deport him to Nepal. The Kathmandu District Court had issued an arrest warrant for Pathak on December 1, 2025, while Interpol released a diffusion notice against him on December 12 on charges related to extortion and criminal networking.

An investigation by the Bureau of Immigration found that Pathak had been involved in serious security-related activities overseas, including encouraging fugitive convicts not to surrender and signaling possible financial and weapons support. He has also been linked to a conspiracy to assassinate a high-ranking foreign government official.

Pathak had reportedly threatened to kill several senior Nepali officials, including CIAA Chief Commissioner Prem Kumar Rai. Records show he entered the Philippines on August 18, 2025, with permission to remain until December 18.

Through email, Pathak allegedly issued death threats to Rai, former Nepal Oil Corporation Executive Director Gopal Khadka, medical entrepreneur and Citizens’ Rescue Campaign coordinator Durga Prasai, former Home Ministers Ramesh Lekhak and Bal Krishna Khand, former CIAA Chief Lokman Singh Karki, and several others — a total of 10 individuals.
