Processing plant of 15 million litres capacity under construction to clean Tukucha rivulet

Kathmandu, Dec 6: A processing plant with the capacity to treat 15 million litres of water daily is under construction to clean the Tukucha rivulet, which flows through the central part of Kathmandu, before discharging it into the Bagmati.

The treatment centre is being constructed on 2.53 hectares at Tripureshwor in Kathmandu and Kupandol in Lalitpur. The cost of the treatment centre being built with a concessional loan obtained through the Asian Development Bank (ADB)’s Bagmati River Basin Improvement Project is Rs 3.18 billion.

The construction of the processing centre is aimed to be completed by Mid-December next year. The Tukucha stream will be diverted to the centre, and after water treatment, it will be discharged into the Bagmati River.
According to the private secretariat of Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Physical Infrastructure and Transport, and Urban Development, Kulman Ghising, 800 kilowatts of electricity will be generated as a by-product of the processing centre.

Currently, the physical structures of the sewage treatment centre towards Tripureshwor are under construction, but the construction of structures towards Lalitpur has not been possible due to locals’ obstruction.

Only structures that generate electricity will be there in Lalitpur. The main sewage treatment structures are under construction in Tripureshwor.

Minister Ghising inspected the under-construction processing centre today and gathered information about the progress of construction. During this, he discussed with the project management involved in construction, consultants, and construction contractors about the schedule for completion, the ongoing issues, and policy decisions required for solutions.

On the occasion, he stated that the government is working to clean the Bagmati River by prioritising the management of its tributaries and riverbanks.

The contractor of the project committed to completing the structures towards Tripureshwor within the stipulated time.
