Kathmandu, Nov 5: CPN (Unified Socialist) leader Ram Kumari Jhakri has announced the end of her political journey with the Unified Socialist Party, saying the mission she joined with high hopes has failed to move forward.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Jhakri said the party, formed under the belief that it would lead a powerful campaign, is now on the verge of dissolution. “We had joined with the belief that a strong campaign would begin, but that campaign has ended. Our chapter is over,” she said.
Jhakri, who had once stood by party chair Madhav Kumar Nepal during the party’s registration at the Election Commission, said she was unfairly blamed for causing division within the party. “Because of that photo, I was made the main culprit for the party split — but it was just a symbol,” she clarified.
She stressed the need for political parties to take responsibility for upholding democracy and ensuring peace and security in the country. Jhakri also argued that democracy within communist parties had eroded after the merger of the CPN-UML and the Maoist Centre to form the then Nepal Communist Party (NCP).
Commenting on the current unification process between the Maoist Centre, the Unified Socialist, and seven other parties, Jhakri warned that such unity would once again undermine internal democracy. The formal merger of the nine leftist parties is scheduled to take place later today.
