UML Central Committee Member Pasang Sherpa Arrested

Kathmandu, Nov 4: CPN-UML Central Committee member Pasang Sherpa has been arrested in connection with a polygamy case.

Sherpa, who was convicted by the court, was taken into custody from Dhumbarahi on Tuesday evening, according to Kathmandu District Police Chief SSP Ramesh Thapa.

A leader of the UML’s ethnic wing, Janajati Federation, Sherpa was found guilty of polygamy by the Patan High Court last year. The case had been filed against him by his wife, Karishma Kharel, at the Kathmandu District Court.

The district court had sentenced him to one year in prison and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000. Although Sherpa appealed the verdict, the High Court upheld the lower court’s decision.

Despite the conviction, Sherpa had reportedly been evading arrest under political protection until his detention on Tuesday evening.
