Kathmandu, Sept 26: The government has issued a 10-day ultimatum to the prisoners who escaped from different jails across the country during the Gen-Z protests to return to the respective jails.
The Home Ministry decided to launch a special drive to bring back the escapees to jails. The Ministry has also formed a Fugitive/Detainee Search and Arrest Taskforce with the coordination of the Assistant Chief District Officer of the concerned districts.
The taskforce will be devoted to search, bring under control and arrest the inmates outside the prisons and bring them back to captivity as soon as possible. The Ministry has given clear instructions to the Task Force, the Chief District Officer of the concerned district and the Prison Management Department to carry out a thorough search, control and arrest operation of the fugitive prisoners.
In course of the operation, the taskforce will coordinate with all security units of the district, all local levels, media, and relevant government offices. Necessary information would be published with the description of escapees.
During the Gen-Z protests, 14,553 prisoners and juvenile delinquents had escaped from 28 prisons and nine Child Reform Centres from across the country. So far, 8,199 prisoners have returned to respective jails, while 6,354 prisoners are still on the run, according to Chomendra Nyupane, Director at the Prison Department.
