Kavrepalanchok, Sept 16: The BP Highway, which had been facing nighttime travel restrictions due to floods and landslide risks during the monsoon, will resume 24-hour operation from September 17.
A meeting of the Kavrepalanchok District Security Committee on Monday decided to fully reopen the highway, citing the end of the monsoon and the upcoming Dashain and Tihar festivals. Authorities said the decision was taken in line with the road safety action plan to ease travel for the public.
Since early July, vehicles were barred from operating at night on the stretch from Dhulikhel to Nepal Thok. The restrictions were extended several times, with vehicles being stopped at Kavrebhanjyang and Nepal Thok during risky conditions.
Last year, floods and landslides had severely damaged multiple sections of the 160-km highway, forcing temporary arrangements. Reconstruction is now underway in four sections.
The BP Highway, a key short route connecting eastern Nepal, handles thousands of vehicles daily.
